Changing the Homepage in Safari

Setting your own homepage lets you customize your browse to fit you.  This basically allows you to choose which page will load when you start up your web browser.  For instance, I use Google alot.  So when I open Safari, Google pops up.  By default Apple has their web page load up for you.  Apple has a pretty cool site but when it comes time to doing what you do most on the web, Apple’s website isn’t very helpful, unless you spend all of your time buying Apple products, in which case more power to you.  Now, if you desire, let me show you how to change this.

In the upper left corner of your browser window you will see the front and back buttons.  Then somewhere to the right of that you will see a text field with a web address such as http://www.apple.com/startpage/.  Delete that and enter the web address you want to have as your homepage.  Mine will look like this as I am setting Google as my homepage:

Navigation Bar

After you have typed in the web address you want as your homepage, click on the Safari menu in the upper left corner(on my image it is right above the red, yellow, and green buttons). Alternatively you can use the key combination, command+,(command+coma) to access the preferences. To learn more about key commands you can read my article, Keyboard Shortcuts with a Mac.

Preferences

Choose the preferences option as highlighted like so. This window will pop up:

Set to Current Page

You will see the option to enter your homepage or right under neath that, “Set to Current Page”. Click this button and the URL(or web address) directly above that will change to the address you entered in the beginning of this tutorial. You can now close out of the preferences dialogue box and quit Safari. Re-open Safari and you will notice that your browser automatically goes to the page you designated.

Firefox is very similar to this step by step. When you open the preferences dialogue box, located in the Firefox menu as opposed to the Safari menu, you will see an option to “Use Current Page.” Click this button and Firefox will use the current page you are viewing as the homepage.

I hope this helps!
